Chapter 11
Rebecca
Rebecca Boyer’s office was one of the most coveted in the Newsweek satellite office of Gables Crossing. Deservedly so, of course. The satellite office used to be in Pensacola, but when Rebecca decided that the commute was too much for her, the decision was made to move the entire operation, rather than lose her.
Such a consideration was generally unheard of for a lowly researcher, but Rebecca had demonstrated an almost psychic sense for finding the details that would make or break a story, and many of the magazine’s most touted covers were due in a large part to Rebecca’s work. Most researchers of her caliber quickly moved on to become writers or editors. Rebecca had no such desire. She loved discovering things that were hidden. She thrilled at putting pieces together to get at the real facts…but the idea of sitting down and trying to figure out how to explain all of those facts to the common reader bored her to tears.
That was what made her so valuable to Newsweek. She was the rarest of rare gems: a great researcher that wanted to stay a researcher. They did good by her, too. She headed a team of researchers that was tasked to find the untold stories that would be next year’s Pulitzer prize winners. Being placed on her team was considered a fast-track move for a young researcher bent on furthering their career. Most importantly, Rebecca enjoyed a near carte blanch budget to do her job. If she needed faster computers, she got them; if she needed to send someone across the globe double-checking information, they were on a plane.
If anyone had ever dared to argue the merit of this trust, she would simply have to point to the 3 Pulitzer prize winning articles framed on her wall, or the 7 cover stories beside them, pulled from the 7 highest selling issues in the past 20 years. All had one thing in common. They were all made possible from her office’s researchers.
Being in such high favor by an employer had perks. The great office and nice paychecks were among the most notable, but there were other, less obvious benefits, as well. For example, it wasn’t uncommon for other companies to approach her with offers to jump ship. Their efforts to gain her for themselves ranged from expensive dinners to executive level gifts.
These attempts to win her over occurred frequently enough that she had a standard method of dealing with them. First, she called the home office to let them know, and assure them that she was uninterested. Second, she sent a letter to the party responsible for the “gift,” informing them that she was perfectly satisfied where she was. Third, she arranged a face-to-face meeting in her office when the letter was inevitably answered with an even more arduous attempt at recruiting her. It was the corporate version of “the big talk.” For the most part, this worked.
Sometimes, however, a corporate headhunter would be so aggressive, that she would have to fast-forward and go straight to the face-to-face conversation.
